They say the Eskimos have over 20 words for snow. Well the Dusuns don't have any, not surprisingly, them being land people. But the Dusuns have various words to refer to rice. It shows how important rice is to them huh? Here are some of the rice referents:
1. takano 'cooked rice'
2. wagas 'uncooked, husked rice'
3. parai 'unhusked rice or riceplant'
4. bukid 'hill rice'
5. tadong 'black/purple rice'
6. tompurion 'unripe rice grains'
7. rinolok 'rice seedlings'
8. tomot 'the rice that have been harvested'
9. tomoton 'the rice being harvested'
10. parai wagu 'fresh rice grains, normally have just been harvested in the last month or so'
11.pulut 'sticky rice' (though I'm not sure whether this one is borrowed from Malay)
12. kuruluh 'dried rice stalks'
and I believe the long list goes on. It is very true indeed that language mirrors the community.

13. Loun 'unhusked/husked rice from last harvest season'(It somehow has lost its aroma and after-cooked texture. This comes to the rescue of tapai merry making for being un-deliciously edible!)
14. Nompuri 'peeled unripe rice grains' (Yummy, I can instantly recall the joy of chewing a handful of 'nompuri'!)
15. Binulugu 'cooked rice ball'. Yeah! Ready to eat :)
16. Kinomulok ‘Rice which has been fermented for a few days’ (Kinomulok also apply to fermented tapioca).

17. Kogut 'kerak nasi/burnt rice' (This is the nearly-burnt-or-sometime-really-burnt rice. You might have left the rice pot heated with slow heat and forgot to turn the heat off even if the rice is well cooked until the too familiar 'burnt' smell fill up your living room! Bad bad :)'
18. Tapun 'rice's unwanted residue or the unsupposed unhusked rice among husked :)' It's either tipun or tapun kali tu. Yg nie lebihan padi yg tidak terbuka kulit dia semasa menumbuk / meng'injin'. We'll use 'rilibu' to 'air' these residues to have clean husked rice.
Maybe what R.N.Tiam means in no. 18 is the 'Puun', or antah in malay.
Alamak... Nolihuan iri'd di Mommy's Recipe. Yes indeed, that's the right word :) 'Puun'. Lol... ada juga la bunyi sikit tu 'tapun'.
Hehe...ya, puun. R.N.T, I believe the list is now as long as the Eskimo's reference for ice LOL

'taapun'- I'd say this belongs to the superstition category- one that I'm happy to practice :-)! Will write about 'taapun' soon...
